The thoughtful read continually surprises. The sweeping narrative details Brisbane's cultural history from the 1940's omwards, a woman's struggles in a man's world, post natal depression, temporary homelessness in England with three small children...Eventually the author was able to say "it was all worth it". This extremerly well-written and engaging book is an acccomplished work. (Extract from a review.)

Miranda's Tempest is the second crime novel with a music setting from author Juliet Hoey. Following on her critically acclaimed debut novel The Sixth Partita, this recent work of crime/mystery is structured along the lines of Shakespeare's play, The Tempest. The story is set in Queensland. Miranda, a Brisbane pianist, is depressed after finding out that her husband has had an affair. When she ignores warnings from her friend's mother, Veronica, about an unsavoury character who is pursuing her, she is attacked and manages to escape with difficulty.

Meanwhile Veronica has found some old newspaper clippings about a crime committed many years ago in Europe, and quite by chance, learns soon afterwards about a mystery associated with Bribie Island, Queensland. While seemingly unconnected, the threads of these disparate events finally weave themselves into a hideous pattern as Miranda unwittingly chances upon a vital piece of evidence which puts her in extreme danger. In a chilling climax, she fights for her life.

Beautiful, talented young pianist Helen O'Donnell appears set for a career as a performer. However, despite her outstanding record as a student at the Queensland Conservatorium, she suffers from acutely debilitating stage fright which threatens to sabotage a very promising concert career.

At her teacher's urging, she seeks professional help and determines to keep performing. She is awarded a scholarship to study in London where all goes well for a time, although she misses her fiancé desperately. However, Helen soon begins to sense that something is very wrong. She is, in fact, being stalked by an unknown musician who knows the pieces she is studying and models the stalking day by day upon a famous piece by Bach – the Sixth Partita. Having conquered her inner fears so courageously, Helen, alone and far from home, is now left to face the terror of a violent death at the hands of a psychopath.
